If I am not going to admit my assignment on given prescribed time, and faculty doesnt ask me or I submitted my assignment late then next time also I am going to do same, epoch looking to me other guys also started submitting ther e assignments late, then slowly-slowly the same process is going to be converted into habit then culture in college of submitting late assignments. In my work place the culture of speaking with the customers in Hindi, therefore for selling the product we required a salesperson those can speak good Hindi which helps the customer to understand the product properly, which bequeath be in force(p) to my organization, if I am going to come on those sales person who speaks in English then there is no use of it, but in India after every fourteen miles language changes, so for dealing in the trade we had to keep that employee who can speak at least three different languages. E.g. Painting work shop is not there in an manufacturing industry and the organization pai nting in the open air, then legally there is going to be problem for the organization by the government. So at this time leader had to think for the proper painting workshop that will be not harmful for any one.In an organization the employees doesnt follow the rules and regulation, then it will be affecting on the activities, product and services, for those the leader had to take initiative, and to control the people in an organization so that they can follow the regulation. E.g. Its all depend upon the leader that at what sought of problem is their with that employee. The leader can leave him perio d giving warning, its all depend upon the situation. The impact on the strategic leader is always a problematic one because if any one break any of these requirements then it will very costly for the organization and as well as for the strategic leader, if any problem occurs then he had to use his skills to resolve those problem, so that the organization should run in a smooth way.Current and Emerging social concerns and expectations impacting leadership in the organizationLeaders impact organizational culture and that, in turn, determines levels of individual, group, and organizational effectiveness. There is also a clear socio-economic class between the leader and the followers. Authoritarian leaders make decisions independently with little or no input from the rest of the group.Impact Researchers found that decision-making was less fictive under authoritarian leadership. It is more difficult to move from an authoritarian style to a democratic style than vice versa. Abuse of this style is usually viewed as controlling, bossy, and dictatorial.Authoritarian leadership is best applied to situations where there is little time for group decision-making or where the leader is the most knowledgeable member of the group. As per my organization the authoritarian leader is the Chairperson of the Gobind Industries, sometimes he had to take it self decisions which is good for the organization but it was les s creative, therefore he tries to make decision while having a meeting with the department leaders.b) Participative Leadership (Democratic)Democratic leadership is generally the most effective leadership style. Democratic leaders offer instruction to group members, but they also participate in the group and allow input from other group members.Impact In this group were less fat than the members of the authoritarian group, but their contributions were of a much higher quality.Participative leaders encourage group members to participate, but retain the final say over the decision-making process. Group members feel engaged in the process and are more motivated and creative. As per my organization the meeting is organism held in every one month by leaders with the staff members to encourage them and to know something new for the organization, this meeting motivates the employee to achieve the objective that is being set by the leaders.c) Delegative (Laissez-Faire)Delegative (laissez-fa ir) leadership was the least productive of all three groups. The members in this group also made more demands on the leader, showed little cooperation, and were unable to work independently.Impact Delegative leaders offer little or no guidance to group members and leave decision-making up to group members. While this style can be effective in situations where group members are highly qualified in an area of expertise, it often leads to poorly defined roles and a lack of motivation.(http//psychology.about.com/od/leadership/a/leadstyle.htm)2.3 Leadership styles in different situations and its impactIn the graph we can see that there are three items as per the different situation in an organization. In first stage the environment and the targets of the organization are soft and they are not under pressure, so the managers should adopt a soft leadership style to maintain the feel-good factor in the team. In this type of situation the leadership is must required to check there members be cause if doesnt then due to easiness of the environment then became laziness, therefore at this time also there should check on the members. If the leader doesnt do this then in future this will be converted into problem for an organization. In second stage the environment becomes harder and targets and processes are under pressure, at this stage the manager had to adopt the harder leadership style, in order to focus the efforts of the team to achieve their goals. At this stage the leader had to take some unpleasant travel against the members of his team, so that they can achieve their goals. If they cannot do this then it will loss for the organization and the blame is going on the team leader, at this point he had use his skills, talents to bring out his team from the hard environment. In third stage if the environment remains hard and targets and processes are under pressure, then the manager had to adopt hard and soft leadership style, so that the members should not frustrate wi th the leader, which will be again harmful for the organization, at this stage the manager had to motivate its members and as well as at some times he should harsh so that the work should not be pending, due to the soft behavior of the manager.Part III3.1 A culture of professionalism, mutual trusts, repute and support within an organization A culture of professionalism in an organization Developing a Culture of professionalism in my own organization while giving example, I am going to be the leader in this organization and developing a culture of professionalism. While entering into my organization, I felt that I just came into the fish market I cannot recognize any of organizational members at first time and the environment is not that much good as it should be in the organization, some of the members are wearing t-shirts, some of them wearing colorful shirts, while looking all these I decided to make a culture of professionalism so that our members can treat to the customers in v alue able manner, and it will be easy for the consumers to recognize the staff members easily. I provided them a dress material and ask them to enter in a this formal dress only which changes the culture and as well as the creates the professionalism in an organization, giving them training how to behave or deal with the customer, which increases our sale and gives satisfaction to our consumers. A mutual trusts mutual trust means the beliefs, truth, reliability, ability or strength of every members are there in an organization. This had to be maintained by the leader within the members. The leader should not be partial with any of the member, if he does that then the others members trust he is being loosing and it is going to affect the organization, which is not a good leadership by the leader, he had to make faith evenly with every members, As parents makes trust, faith and treats equally to all of their children in the same way the organization is also like a family. Respect res pect in an organization is must because without respecting all(prenominal) other you cannot move a single step also. If the staff member gives respect to the manager then he/she also had to give respect to his juniors. Respect can be in terms of listening to the seniors and giving respect to juniors, helping them in any of the problem. In an organization giving respect to the customer is must, it can while dealing them asking about water or tea or a coffee, or while receiving them in the reception area, these all shows the respect towards a consumer and as well as within the members of an organization. Support within the organization the support can be given with in the team members, it can be one department to another department also. The example, if a employee is being given some work to do and he is not able to complete within the time period, then his team member can give support to finish his work on time. Example between two departments, in sales department if any of the memb er sales something to the consumer and to the consumer he had to give bill of the product, then the sales person request to the finance department to give their support to them for printing out bill as soon as possible.3.2 Strategic leader focus on Organization in the achievement of objectivesThe leader must focus on the objectives as higher profits, shareholder value and customer satisfaction. To achieve results, the leader had to develop a solid, sound, customer-focused, and entrepreneurial strategy, aimed at market leadership, based on innovation, and tightly focused on decisive opportunities. He had to provide the feedback to the organization about the higher profits every month so that he can came to know that where he is failing to bring up higher profits. These can be done while increasing the market share, ontogenesis in the quality of a product, good after sales service. While providing all these he bring the higher profits for the organization and as well as customer sati sfaction and the shareholder value in the market. Shares are rising of the company on the daily or weekly basis, which is again beneficial to the organization.3.3 Strategic Leader supports and develops understanding of the organizations directionThe organizational direction means the organization vision, mission, values and direction towards customers. The strategic leader supports the vision of the organization, as the vision of the organization is To become a most successful and respected thresher company in the India and the best after sale service provider in the market. So the strategic leader had to work as per their vision because Gobind Industries is already a respected organization in India and it is easy for the leader to make more successful organization and he can develop this by working on it or by providing best after sales service to the consumers as compare to their competitors. We will provide high quality of product so that the consumer can easily use multi crop thr eshers this is the mission of the company which the leader had to support while making corrections in the machinery to achieve more better quality of product as in the mission is being mentioned. The organization values are believing in excellence service through Integrity, Innovation and LearningIntegrity that the strategic leader develops and support is the honesty and doing right thing for their consumers and always honoring our commitments.Strategic leader develop and support the creativity and change for achieving continuous improvements and results in our jobs and in our organization. As the organizational direction is about learning then the strategic leader support and develop this part in itself also which will be helpful for himself and for the organization too. Organization weigh in on going learning new things by getting knowledge from consumer, market, suppliers, dealers, friends or from any stakeholder about our product fault or any better need for an organization which will be beneficial for our consumer and for the organization.3.4 Strategic Leadership Styles are adapted to meet changing needs and to enable organizational development and commitmentWith varying degrees of success, many leaders get their strategy making to this point and either stop or their process stalls. A major reason is the lack of understanding and commitment to the steps required to build more effective strategic leadership practices and a strategy dialogue in the operating groups below the senior managers. These groups and especially their leadership teams frequently do not know how to proceed and there is no consistent in-house resource to financial aid them. The net effect is the sense of excitement and momentum that was generated at the top of the house in the earlier stages of the strategy process is lost and the strategy team of employees is derailed before it is even gets started. One of the best ways to address this is to identify and train a cadre of high potentia l line managers in the halfway of the organization that can serve as champions of the strategy process to those both above and below them. In this sense they serve both as a catalyst for the process and as a bridge between formulation and implementation. They do not replace the leadership role of the senior teams in each of these operating group but they do serve as a critical additional resource that is dedicated to creating momentum and fostering consistency. This can be especially important if the strategy defined requires changes in the organizational culture as well as the business model. This resource also helps to ensure that the daily running the business is not neglected as the demands of building a large-scale strategy dialogue come into play.To integrate both dimensions into strategy making in a way that creates a winning outcome and gets the whole organization understanding and committed to this common agenda requires leaders who are clear about the strategic capacity of each of their internal stakeholder groups and who have the perspective and insights to lead in a way that incorporates both dimensions as the strategy is developed. The steps described below are intended to provide the leader with techniques to do that. Taken collectively, they define a process that incorporates both the analytical and human dimensions, while challenging individuals throughout the organization to raise the quality and quantity of their strategic thinking and their strategic leadership.ConclusionFinally, when deciding what vocabulary and toolset is best to use while working across large populations, simpler is usually better. The simpler the language and the fewer the tools, the more accessible the strategy becomes to larger groups of people and the more people can understand it, know how they should think and talk about it, and identify how they can contribute. Some situations require more sophisticated (i.e. more complicated) tools because there is a need for mu ch more thorough analytics. Many do not. The right balance point between comprehensiveness and simplicity will provide enough analytical complexness to adequately describe the marketplace, the customers, what you do and how you will compete, but nothing more than that. Simplicity, where it can be found, makes a significant difference when working across a large population.

Health And Illness Across The Lifespan Health And Social Care Essay
Health And Illness Across The Lifespan Health And Social C ar EssayThe Royal College of Nursing defines nursing as the drop of clinical judgement in the provision of care to enable multitude to improve, maintain, or recover health, to cope with health problems, and to achieve the best possible fictitious character of life, whatever their ailment or disability, until death (RCN, 2003). This essay will look at the role as a nurse, in supporting an individual, the family or carer live with a person suffering from Alzheimers distemper. Walkers, (2002) definition of Alzheimers is that of a chronic thought malady, manifesting itself in premature get on withing, with speech disorder and was first discovered by a German neurologist, Dr Alois Alzheimer who, in 1906, examined the brain of a affected role he cared for who subsequently died of an unusual mental illness (dementia) at age 51. Her symptoms included memory loss, manner of speaking difficulties, and unpredictable behavi oural manner. After her death, Dr Alois Alzheimer examined her brain and found a plague like structure and tangled filament in the nerve (neurons) of the patient brain (Stanton, 2001). The plaques represent a naturally occurring sticky protein and the tangled filament represents collapsed tau proteins. Though Krebs, et al (2012) theory agrees with this that plaque clumps (now called amyloid plaques) and tangled bundles of fibres (now called neurofibrillary tangles) accumulating in the brain triggers this disease, it has been called into question.Of today, Alzheimers is categorise an unquantifiable science condition which holds within its own right a large area of mental health. The definition of Walkers, (2002) degenerative refers to gradual deterioration this means that this disease whitethorn be broken into gradual lay outs of early, middle and late. The early (onset) stage appears with symptoms such as memory loss, confusion, personality and behavioral changes, these normally o ccur between 2-4 years prior to and during diagnosis. The middle (progressive) stage has similar symptoms as the onset but with more obvious signs such as an increase of confusion, an increase of memory loss, difficulty in completing simple tasks, showing a decrease in communication skills and occasionally can at times appear to be delusional this stage may be more distinct with language ability being decreased. This stage has a time frame of 2-10 years pursuance diagnosis. The late (end) stage show symptoms that are more prominent than earlier stages, with the inability to care for oneself with little or no communication ability, continence and inability to recognize loved ones, followed by death usually caused by infections. These symptoms may appear between 1-3 years after the disease has passed through its progressive stage as Gwythers (1985) cited by Gogia and Rastogi (2009). Though the cause of this disease is a common subject amongst scientist and physicians, it is believe d that excessive intake of atomic number 13 may be a place factor in acquiring this disease. In the 1960s and 1970s, research showed high aluminium levels in the brain tissues of some people who died with Alzheimers disease this discovery spurred allday concern that exposure to aluminium in our diet could be the cause of the disease (Rao and Rao 1995). Since then several scientific studies have examined the link between aluminium and Alzheimers, and none have found a clear association between them, Dean (2009). This contradicts Crapper et al (1976) that Aluminium has been shown to be associated both, with plaques and tangles, in the brain of people with Alzheimers disease. There have been numerous studies among experts to resolve the issue in question, whether aluminium is in fact the cause of Alzheimers disease. This has been extremely difficult as this common disease is believed to have multiple causes, but while aluminium is widespread in our environment, at that place is no method that allows researchers to measure this individual burden or biography exposure to this element.Lliffe and Rusted, (2012) states that although no one single factor has been identified to be the cause of Alzheimers disease, it is likely that a combination of factors, including age, genetic inheritance, lifestyle and overall cosmopolitan health, are responsible. Even so, Alzheimers disease has a high impact on the aged population affecting around 496,000 people in the UK, with one in every fourteen people over the age of 65 and one in six over the age of 80, this shows that the greatest risk factor of Alzheimers is thus old age. However, this disease is not restricted to the older generation in the UK alone, there are over 17,000 people under the age of 65 breathing with the disease. (Ref) The Wife of United States moulder president Regan quoted Alzheimer disease is a cruel disease that steals lives. Its hard to know what to expect. The years of exchanging memories of old age are gone. Its a long, long good-bye (Reagan, N. Cited in Brill, 2005).Burfoot, (2008) believes there are a minority that do not worry about getting Alzheimers disease these include athletes which are at half the risk compared to that of the sedentary individual, studies have shown that they are showing lower risk for senile dementia and diseases like Alzheimers. Indeed, the chances of Alzheimers disease increases with each straight year of life after age 65. However, Alexander, (2009) believes that the disease is inevitable and is associated with the ageing population, particularly from the baby boom generation that came after the second world contend and alike due to the difference in medical care given by the National Health service (NHS) compared to health services that were available at this era, because of this people are living longer, and an increase in population means more people are do it to old age, but the re screen for devising it to old age is a gift of Alzhei mers for 6 from every 100 people who gets past the age of 65, (Brody 2011). Though scientists have estimated that 496,000 people have Alzheimers disease in the United Kingdom alone and 22 million worldwide, the disease only affects about five percent of people ages 65 to 80 and about half the population of those 80 and older. Disturbingly, the disease is becoming even more common statistics now show that the number of people with the disease doubles every five years among older people and failing to find a preventative or curative measure will be costly to society.Alzheimers disease not only affects the patient, but the society and family around them. Alzheimers disease slowly attacks the cognitive function, which is the higher thought processes. These individuals degenerate in such a mien that they return to the stages of infantile dependents (Ref). While the lives of family members, especially those directly involved in the individuals care, are significantly impacted in m whats oever ways, sympathize with for adults with a degenerative disease can be an extremely physically demanding task, Clark, (2001). For the primary caregiver involved in the day-to-day care, the disease can take its toll emotionally, physically, mentally and financially. The carer responsibility may even be extended for many years of course this depends on what stage of Alzheimers the sufferer has been progressed to.The diagnosis of a parent or spouse with Alzheimers disease may also conjure up a number of mixed emotions such as frustration, helplessness, or even guilt. The fact that it is a progressive and ultimately terminal illness can be difficult to grasp, Lu and Bludau (2011). To have a family member suffering from Alzheimers disease alters your life unavoidably, as the reversal of roles from being the child to the nurturing care provider can be unsettling and even overwhelming. The impact on the family can be quite difficult to witness, of honoring a previously vibrant and ind ependent parent decline over time to a former shadow of themselves and having to adjust to the increasing responsibilities as a caregiver can be psychologically demanding, as this role reversal usually occurs for spouses. For example a husband whose wife who has always managed the household may find himself having to take over this role, or vice versa. Children and grandchildren, nieces and nephew may find themselves in this role. Whatever the make-up of the family, there is usually a role reversal, where soul to steps into the shoes of the caregiver, Lu and Bludau (2011).This is where a therapeutic relationship between the nurse, the family and patient has to be formed this is a key component in the nursing profession that enables the best care possible is provided to an Alzheimers sufferer. However, before any treatment is given consent must be obtained (NMC, 2008) whether it may be from family members or clinicians caring for the patient on a day-to-day basis if the patient is u nable. Making decisions for such person as long as its within their best pursual and lacking the mental capacity to do so for themselves is acceptable, as the Mental Capacity Act (the Act) 2005 states any act done or decision make on behalf of an adult lacking capacity must be in their best interests. In the case of an Alzheimers sufferer, as their cognitive memory deteriorates, neglection and decision making for themselves mothers apparent, these patients becomes highly vulnerable, helpless and in a dependent position and looks to the nurse to uphold their dignity and respect for their confidentiality, as stated by the Nursing and tocology Council (NMC), a person must be treated with respect, dignity and has the right to confidentiality, NMC (2008). As quality of care not only depends on good health care but also on respect for the person as an individual DH, (2001).Teamwork in this sense also has a vital role, without this, communication between polar agencies such as social s ervices, and the multidisciplinary team which may involve psysiotherapy, psychologist and nutritionist. These skills together will identify the support needed to make sure treatment is patient-centered and also promotes a collaborative partnership between the patient and health professionals (Silverman et al, 2005), only then effective treatment can be achieved that is needed for an Alzheimers sufferer. As a nurse, one should have excellent communication skills, whether through speaking, writing, observing or listening (Egan, 2002), this will enable them to be the ultimate patients advocate. To expand on this, nurses form the primary system of support this could range from logistical issues, such as treatment in the accident and emergency department through to being admitted to the ward within the hospital. In the case of an Alzheimers patient where the patient may be within his or her own home for some time, regularly visiting the patient to assess the patients health condition, to provide emotional support to both frightened patient and family member. The nurse must be able to facilitate and identify any health promotions needed for his or her patient so that they are able to implement any strategy to best support the patient, family and carer neccessary. In an Alzheimers patient, onset of many chronic diseases, infection or illnesses will become inevitable and a reduction in a once bubbly individual will be a thing of the past, as their brain deteriorates. Alzheimers sufferer may forget simple task such as washing of themselves or eating the needed amount of meals necessary for intake of nutritions needed, thus health promotions has to be tailored specifically for an Alzheimers patient unigue lifespan (Hubley and Copeman, 2008). Addressing issues such as smoking or homework as well as living alone will enable any health concerns will allow you to make any changes before they become a danger to themselves or others.Alzheimer sufferer also needs to be protect ed from abuse this is one of many important aspects of being a nurse. jest at may come in many forms, being physical, psychological, financial, sexual, neglect or discriminated upon because of their culture or ethnicity and as the United Kingdom becomes a multicultural society, there are implications on how healthcare is delivered by nurses. Furthermore, a nurses operation is guided by principles of moral and effectual rights, this compliments excellent nursing care. Awareness of the legal codes helps them to control complicated situation that they may encounter and helps to direct the nurse as well as their multidisciplinary team in the best possible action answerable by law (Dimond, 2011). It is important that nurses are aware of this and that they are sensitive when treatment is being administered. Nurses need to familiarise themselves with what is acceptable behaviour and move accordingly (Timby, 2005). An example being that in some cultures it may be unacceptable to make ey e contact while in others it is not or it may also be unacceptable to touch certain parts of one body.In conclusion, whether or not aluminium or old age is infact the cause of Alzheimers disease, the nurse has to be the the patients representative in order to address underlying issues that exist between, the family, carer and society. Also, to amalgamate the multidisciplinary team and relevant agencies so that health promotions may be implemented by means of controling infections, which is the predisposing factor of an Alzheimers patient death. This relationship is complex and the nurses job has to be the forefront of it all, whether it may be to educate family and carer on how best to include hygiene and infection control as the disease worsen or to inform the multidisciplinary team about the patients health and wellbeing.

Effect of Roasting Coffee on Caffeine Conten
Effect of Roasting Coffee on caffein ContenIntroductionCoffee has been a popular drink since 20th century, non only because of its variant colors and flavors due to antithetic degrees of cook, but also the military force on which it great deal keep you to stay awake and to finish your job. It is usu every(prenominal)y known that the reason for java to possess this effect is because of the caffein inside the chocolate beans. In general, there ar four main types of roast methods in the patience, namely, Light Roast, Medium Roast, Full Roast and Double Roast. There argon a variety of uses on caffeine nowadays. By interfering with adenosine in wit and body, it moderates new transmission of signals in CNS, Central Nervous System, and therefore keeps people awake1. Due to its short half-life in human body, around 4-10 hours on average2, it potty be use to augment the effect of analgesic for pain control3 Also it has effect on delaying the muscle fatigue. However, caffeine p ush aside cause negative effect on human body, for example, increase the heart rate, breathing rate and makes people feel more alert and energetic, which is also the reason why International surpassing Committee forbid high caffeine wasting disease. Moreover, it is a mildly addictive drug, so some people mountain non control the consumption of caffeine under overdose, which could kick in to caffeinism.4 Also, gibe to the a study held by Montreal University, if pregnant woman consume more than 1.5 cup of java, the mishap of miscarriage is doubled if consume more than four, the chance of miscarriage is tripled.5Therefore, the choice of caffeine consumption from coffee becomes critical due to its harmful effect on human body. It is advised that, if necessary, 100-300 mg per day of caffeine consumption is acceptable. However, people atomic number 18 usually lack of knowledge slightly the caffeine message in the coffee and bring no paper what substance scarce is in the coff ee they ar drinking. Thus, they often use their senses to identify the caffeine content in coffee relative to each another(prenominal). However, there atomic number 18 a make do of myths ab reveal this method. For example, those darker coffee has more caffeine than lighter coffee due to its darkness or that the caffeine is destroyed during roasting in higher temperature, so the caffeine content in lighter coffee is higher than that of darker coffee. To proceed over-dosing of caffeine from coffee, it is vital for people to have the general idea of comparing the caffeine content in different coffee when buying a them.In this essay, the caffeine contents in coffee beans roasted in different degrees are examined by experiment through the extraction of caffeine by chemical core. The result would be interpreted by focusing on the roasting unconscious process, as coffee beans experience greatest change in physical or chemical change during roasting. Although there are a lot of sub- degrees of the main four roasting degrees, only one sub-degree from each degree would be selected as representative.Research QuestionDoes different roasting degree run into the caffeine content in coffee beans? Background InformationOriginal Coffee beansThe airplane pilot coffee beans are unripened in color. They reserve non-volatile alkaloids, proteins and amino acid, carbohydrates, lipids, non-volatile chlorogenic acid, and volatile6 compounds. Among the non-volatile alkaloids, caffeine is the nigh abundant. It contains 1-2.5% w/w 7 of kilobyte coffee been. caffeinCaffeine is a white, crystalline odorless and bitter tasting solid.8 It exists in the localise of coffee beans as a natural pesticide. Its formal name is trimethylxanthine, or in agreementatic naming 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine or 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione.9 The chemical formula of caffeine is C8H10N4O2. It is a polar10 organic compound that contains carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen. Its d ensity in solid form is 1.23 g/cm3. Due to the presence of nitrogen in the compound, caffeine is base in nature. Since it is a polar molecule, it is soluble to irrigate, especially in fervent water. The solvability of caffeine in water is 22 at 25, 180 at 80, and 670 at 100.11 Under pressure of standard ambient temperature and pressure12, the melting point of caffeine is 23813 and it can also sublime at 178in nearly vacuum14, which will be explained by phase draw next.Phase DiagramThree general phases of matter are solid, liquid and fluid. Change of phase does not only depend on the temperature, but also the surrounding pressure acting on the chemicals. For example, the boil point of water is 100, under standard ambient temperature and pressure. However, if the is placed in a lower atmospheric pressure, the boiling point of water is decreased since the vapor pressure is already greater than the atmospheric pressure, so water molecules can avoidance from the water surface in a lower required aught. Therefore, each compound can undergo phase change to the three phases in different combination of temperature and pressure. Figure 2 is a phase diagram of . The lines dividing the diagram into sections represent that under certain temperature and pressure, would undergo change of phase, which is equilibrium mingled with the twain phases that the line is dividing. For example, the red line, if A 1, then the corresponding melting point increases, epoch the corresponding boiling point, A, decreases. Each element has their own phase diagram to illustrate the transition of phases under different combination of temperature and pressure. Figure 3 is a phase diagram illustrating the phase transitions of caffeine, which is different from . This is critical in ulterior interpretation of the result in the experiment. It is because roasting process involves temperature and pressure change.Roasting processThe main purpose of roasting coffee beans is to exterminate tox ins, enhance the gustatory sensation and concentrate the odor wanted. Since viridity coffee beans are hard, little smell and contain a lot of compounds that are bitter in taste. Therefore, by roasting, it can result in both physical and chemical change in the green coffee beans. Since caffeine is the main factor that is concerned in this essay, other chemical change will not be discussed. Although there are a lot different roasting processes in the industry, such as fluidized fork up roasting, fast roasting or horizontal rotating drum, the basic process of roasting is similar. During roasting, there are 10% to 20% lost in weight from the green coffee beans. Here is a summary of roasting process of coffee beansHeating of Green Coffee Beans from 3-5 minutes (ab appear 25 to 100)The green coffee beans are heated so that the water in the original coffee beans evaporates at a very fast rate. As this point, the green coffee beans turn from green to yellow due to caramelization of sugar in the coffee beans.Heating of Yellow Coffee Beans from 5th-9th minutes (about 170to 200)The yellow coffee beans are further heated and separate to turn to brown in color as more sugar being caramelized. Carbon dioxide and water are forced to escape out of the coffee beans due to the high pressure inside, as the temperature is very high, which also causes the expansion in surface of coffee beans. The aroma also starts to give out at this stage.First crack from 10th-11th minutes (about 210)A first sound of crack gives out as the coffee beans expand to almost double in size from green coffee beans in high temperature. Familiar aroma is given out and the coffee beans turn golden brown at this stage. subsequently this stage, according to different degrees of roasting required, the coffee beans will undergo different temperatures and time periods for further heating. During the process, the sugar is caramelized further and coffee oil is released.Light roastTo win light roasted coffe e beans, the beans from stage 3 are to be roasted about one more minute in about 215 in the first place the second crack.Medium roastFor further half to one minute from light roasted in about 230, a second crack occurs and it means medium roast is finished.Full roastIf continued for half to one minute from medium roasted in about 240, full roasted coffee beans are collected.Double roastThis is the most common final step that coffee beans would be roasted, which is acquired from continuing the roasting from full roasted coffee beans for about half a minute more in about 245. The sugar in the coffee beans at this stage is started to burn and degraded. The above heating process can be achieved by either roasting the coffee beans on a hot plate, which is a traditional roasting method in industry or in home roasting, or passing the coffee beans by high temperature steam.MethodVariablesIndependent Degree of roasted coffee beansDependent Caffeine extracted from the coffee beans (g)Controll ed Mass of roasted coffee beans (g)Brand of coffee beans (Starbucks)Apparatus The following apparatus are used in this experiment.Chemicals The following chemicals are used in this experiment.ProceduresExtracting chemicals compounds out of coffee beansMeasure 100mL of distilled water by graduated cylinder rain buckets the water into a 200mL beaker.Place the beaker on a hot plate and heat the hot plate to 100.Place a weighing boat on an electronic scale and tare it.Measure 3g of coffee beans, in form of powder, on the electronic scale and volume it.Add the 3g of coffee powder into the boiling water. consumption glass rod to stir the solution during heating. after(prenominal) the water boils, which means it reaches 100, set the temperature to 80 and allow the solution to stand for 20 minutes to extract as much caffeine as possible. accounting of Stage 1 procedureSince caffeine is a polar molecule, it fragments in water, especially in hot water. It is because increase in temperature leads to increase in solubility of solids, as less energy is required directly from the molecule to break the water molecules a serving from each other. Use of distilled water instead of tap water is to prevent any interruption from foreign ions exist, such as decreasing the solubility of caffeine. The water volume to coffee powder grass ratio has to be large to ensure that there is enough water to dissolve caffeine. Hotplate is preferred as it is easier to manipulate the temperature. The decrease in temperature from boiling point is to prevent any further evaporation of water, which may decrease the amount of caffeine extracted from coffee beans powder. Also, the coffee beans have to be in powder form in order to increase the surface area to dissolve completely in the solution.Assumption in Stage 1 procedureThe coffee beans are originated from the said(prenominal) coffee beans farm.No other procedure apart from roasting and grinding is done. The coffee beans are roasted in the sam e method. The degree of roasting is exactly same as listed on the package.Separate caffeine from other chemicals in the solutionUse filter paper and filter move to filter out large remaining solids. After the solution in stage 1 is cooled down, measure 2g of sodium change by electronic scale and add it to the solution.Use glass rod to stir the solution and allows sodium carbonate to dissolve in the solution.Use a pipette of 25 mL to transfer 25 mL of dichloromethane to the solution in order to obtain accurate measurement and stir it with a glass rod for a few minutes.Pour the solution into a separating move and cover it.20Use a stand to hold the separating funnel and allow the solution in it to separate into two unmixable layers.Precaution of Stage 2Since dichloromethane is a volatile organic solvent, it is toxic when inhaled. Thus, starting from step 3 in Stage 2 and onward, all steps in the experiment have to be carried in the skunk board.Make sure the opening of the separating funnel is closed before pouring the solution. history of Stage 2 procedureApart from caffeine, the solution from stage 1 also contains different compounds extracted from the coffee beans, which are soluble in water too. The most abundant amount among the other compounds is tannin, which usually exists in plants products. Therefore, the addition of sodium carbonate is to remove those compounds other than caffeine by allowing those compounds to be more soluble and hence, allow them to dissolve in water instead of other solvents. The addition of dichloromethane is the most important procedure. It is a good organic solvent to dissolve caffeine. Although caffeine is a polar molecule and has dipole moment of 3.64D22, it dissolves more readily in less polar dichloromethane, which has dipole moment23 of 1.14D24, while H2O 1.84D25. It is because caffeine is a large molecule, so small charges are distributed over a large distance, which makes the molecule less polar than water even though is has big value of dipole moment than water. Therefore, it dissolves more readily in dichloromethane than in water.Since the preindication of dichloromethane is far less than water and is almost non-polar, it is not miscible with water, and due to its molar mass, 84.93g/mol, which is heavier than water molecule, 18.02g/mol, it sinks in the separating funnel.Assumptions in Stage 2 procedureAll caffeine in coffee beans dissolves in the boiling water from stage 1All caffeine is dissolved in dichloromethane from water and no other compounds.Completion of caffeine extract (In fume board)Label a beaker for the number of trial of a particular broad of coffee beans.Weigh the mass of a beaker by electronic balance and record it.Place the measured beaker under the separating funnel and open the funnel to run the lower dichloromethane down to the beaker.Cover can be opened a little in order to add atmospheric pressure inside the funnel, so that solution can run down smoother.Close the cover of the funnel when reaching the separating line and allow the solution to run slowly.Close the funnel when the line of separation is reached at the tip of the funnel.Place the beaker with collected dichloromethane on a hot plate.26Turn the temperature of hot plate to 100.Wait until all solutions are evaporated and the beaker is dried and white crystals remain.Allow the beaker to cool down then measure the mass again on the electronic scale and record it. The difference surrounded by the mass of beaker in step 1 and step 9 in Stage 3 is the mass of caffeine extracted from the coffee beans.Explanation for Stage 3 procedureEach beaker has different mass, so every individual mass must be weighed before usage. Step 1 must be done if trials are being done simultaneously. If some extra solutions from the upper part of the separating funnel are obtained, the entire procedure has to be started again. Since the boiling point of dichloromethane is 40, 100can make sure that any water and dichl oromethane are evaporated while 100is still far lower than the point of sublimation of caffeine in vacuum.Assumption in Stage 3 procedureAll dichloromethane is collected in the beaker.Only caffeine remains in the beaker after evaporation of other solution. Finally, repeat the entire procedure to obtain 5 trials result for each kind of roasted coffee beans. Therefore, there will be 20 results obtained. After all procedures are done, make sure all the apparatus which have tie with dichloromethane are placed inside the fume board and all solutions are poured into a big beaker. Label the beaker as toxic organic emaciate in order to allow the technician to dispose or treat them correctly.Raw dataObservationWhite precipitates remained. The precipitates are odorless.White precipitates stick on the piece of ass of the beaker. Conclusion and AnalysisFrom the calculations and Diagram 1, it can be seen that the percentages of caffeine existing in each coffee beans roasted in different degree ar e very closed. Therefore, the answer to the research question based on the result should be the caffeine content in a coffee bean is not affected during the roasting process. The result is reliable since all percentages lie between 3.2% and 4.0%, which are between the greatest value of lower limits and the lowest value in the upper limits of all percentages. Moreover, the trend shows neither increasing nor decreasing as the degree of roasting increases. Thus, there should not be any relationship between the degree of roasting and the caffeine content in the corresponding coffee beans. I will now interpret the results with regarding the background knowledge.Referring back to the roasting process, it is make believe that no chemical is added during the roasting process. However, the roasting process involves high temperature on direct heating with metal pans or using high temperature steam as alternative. One myth about the roasting process is that people claim that some caffeine is destroyed or evaporated during roasting under high temperature, so lighter coffee beans contain more caffeine than darker coffee beans. However, most of the roasting temperatures are under the melting point of caffeine, which is, indeed, not enough energy to destroy intra-molecular bonds. Although the temperature used for double roasted coffee beans are a little higher than the melting point of caffeine, the temperature only stands for about half a minute, which is not enough for the internal part of coffee beans to rise to melting point of caffeine. Neither, therefore, destroy nor evaporation of caffeine is unlikely to occur during the roasting process. Moreover, some myths say that due to the fact that the point of sublimation of caffeine is 178 and the temperature for full roast and double roast is already beyond that temperature, which exceeds 200, thus, the caffeine content in darker coffee beans is again described as less caffeine content that lighter coffee beans. It seems to be reasonable at first, but apart from temperature, we also estimate the pressure in roasting process, since phase change depends on temperature and pressure as mentioned before in this essay. Considering the method of heating green coffee beans directly, in order to keep the temperature over 200, it is necessary that the system of the roasting process is under a closed condition, so that less energy is lost to the surrounding. check to the Ideal Gas Law, PV = nRT, where P is the pressure, V is the volume, n is the number of moles of gas molecules, R is the gas constant and T is temperature. As the system is closed, the volume, amount of gas and R, indeed, are constant. Therefore, if the temperature increases, the pressure also increases in the system. Same condition is in the method of using high temperature steam. Although it is commonly known that gas is the highest phase and the temperature cannot increase anymore, it is possible to create a steam with higher temperature than its boiling point, which is in a closed system. So if 200 steam is to be used, the roasting system has to be closed. Applying the same principle as before, the pressure also increases with the increase in temperature.Refer to figure 3, the phase diagram of caffeine. As the pressure increases, the docile line, the melting point of caffeine increases, the red line. Since the atmospheric pressure is increased to against the vapor pressure of caffeine, so more energy needed to break the forces between caffeine molecules in solid, which is an exothermic reaction27. Also, from the diagram, the line representing the sublimation point, purple rectangle, is only under relatively low pressure and temperature, as 178under vacuum condition, which is not the case in roasting coffee beans. Thus, it is incorrect to say that caffeine sublimes during roasting process. To conclude, high temperature and pressure in roasting process are the reasons that the caffeine content is not affected regardless t he degree of roasting that the coffee beans have achieved. Therefore, even different degree of roasted coffee beans is used to brew coffee, the caffeine consumption is the same no matter which type of coffee you prefer. Indeed, decaffeinated coffee is not taken into account.Limitations and EvaluationsRandom errors Random error arises since caffeine may not be all dissolved in dichloromethane since it still has a little solubility in room temperature water. Furthermore, the caffeine extracted by dichloromethane may contain impurities, which affect the mass of caffeine recorded. Also, the measurement using graduated cylinder causes uncertainties. Moreover, the use of other equipments such as electronic balance, which causes 0.01g on the mass measured. dogmatic errors The quantity of sample is too small, which causes unclear results obtained since large difference may be obtained if sample has larger quantity. If there is any difference of caffeine content, it would be more obvious if increase the amount of each coffee powder sample used. However, due to the fact that school laboratory do not have a large beaker at the time the experiment was performed, which required more than 200mL, only small amount of sample in each trial can be used in order to keep a large ratio between the volume of water and the mass of the coffee powder. Moreover, the major dictatorial error is the separation of two layers in separating funnel. Since the running of dichloromethane into a beaker is manipulated by hands and through the observation. To ensure that all dichloromethane is collected, the closure of the separating funnel is a little delayed due to the bubbles in the separating line, which blurred the exact separating take. Therefore, a little solution of the upper part, which contains the impurities from coffee beans, is added into the dichloromethane in the beaker. After the evaporation, since sodium carbonate is added before and it has high boiling point due to its ionic str ucture, its mass contributes to the mass weighed on the electronic balance. Methods to resolve the major self-opinionated error- Sublimation of caffeineIn order to resolve the major systematic error, a further step can be done if equipment is allowed in school laboratory. Since caffeine sublimes well under vacuum at 178, as no air molecules against the vapor pressure of caffeine, the collected caffeine can be placed into a flask connecting to a aspirator, which keeps the condition in vacuum, and have a cold finger above it and a heat source below the flask. Caffeine can then sublime and precipitate on the cold finger. Thus, pure caffeine can be collected and weighed.Further unresolved question and suggested investigationAlthough the caffeine content is not affected by roasting, a step backward can result in an unresolved question, which is whether green coffee beans grown from different places contain different level of caffeine inside? A suggested way to do so is that buy different coffee beans of same roasted level from different locations around the world. This can be done by using internet shopping. After, extract caffeine from each example and compare the caffeine content in each coffee bean from different location.Since there are more and more methods of roasting in the industry, such as fluidized bed roasting and fast roasting29, it would be interesting to investigate whether these new methods of roasting can affect the caffeine content in the coffee beans even they are claimed to be same degree of roasting after all.BibliographyA, Nehlig JL, Daval G, Debry (1992). Also, caffeine acts as a natural insecticide for the plant. Moreover, caffeines half life is 5.7 hours in a n ormal adult body.31Proteins and amino acidsProteins and amino acids make up 8-12% w/w of a green coffee bean.CarbohydratesCarbohydrates account for 50% w/w of a green coffee bean, mostly polysaccharides.LipidsLipids, ester, long chained unsaturated fatty acids and amides are found in green coffee beans. The fatty acid is saturated during roasting process, which accounts for the coffee oil.Non-volatine chlorogenic acidsChlorogenic acids are antioxidant. They are good for health, but 70% of them are destroyed during roasting process.Volatile compoundsVolatile compounds are found in green coffee beans as aldehydes, short-chained fatty acids and nitrogen containing aromatic molecules. However, the aromatic molecules in green coffee beans are unpleasant, which is the reason that coffee beans are roasted in order to form pleasant odor of aromatic molecules.Degree of roastingIt can be seen that although dipole moment of caffeine is very large, larger than water, the size of the molecule is very large compared to water and dichloromethane. Therefore, charges are spread widely, which makes the polarity of caffeine molecule less polar. Thus, caffeine dissolves more readily in dichloromethane than in water or sodium carbonate, which is ionic compound. Sodium carbonate is used to react and make some compound other than caffeine to be more soluble to water, such as tannin.34Nehlig, A, Daval JL, Debry G (1992). The Scarlet Letter :: essays research papers
The Scarlet LetterAccording to the New England Primer, a basic textbook used during Puritan times, in flings fall, we pitned all. This quote very much applies to Nathaniel Hawthornes characters in The Scarlet Letter. The main characters, Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth, and the Puritan society represented by the townspeople, all sinned. This tosh is a study of the effects of sin on the hearts and minds of Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth. Sin strengthens Hester, humanizes Dimmesdale, and turns Chillingworth into a demon.Hester Prynnes sin was adultery. This sin was regarded very seriously by the Puritans, and was often punished by death. Hesters punishment was to endure a public shaming on a scaffold for three hours and wear a scarlet letter A on her chest for the rest of her life in the town. Although Hawthorne does not pardon Hesters sin, he takes it less serious than those of Dimmesdale and Chillingworth. Hesters sin was a sin of passion. This sin w as openly hold as she wore the A on her chest. She did not deliberately mean to commit her sin or mean to hurt others. Hesters sin is that her passions and love were of more importance to her than the Puritan moral code. This is shown when she says to Dimmesdale, What we did had a consecration of its own. We felt it so We said so to each other(Hawthorn pg. 48) Hester fully acknowledged her guilt and displayed it with pride to the world. This was obvious by the way she displayed the scarlet letter. It was elaborately designed as if to show Hester was proud. Hester is indeed a sinner, adultery is no lightheaded matter, even today. On the other hand, her sin has brought her not evil, but good. Her charity to the poor, her comfort to the broken-hearted, he unquestionable presence in times of trouble atomic number 18 all direct results of her quest for repentance. Her salvation also lies in the truth. She tells Dimmesdale of Chillingworths real identity, keeping it a secret before, to aid in her salvation. Her pursuit in telling the truth is evident in the lines, In all things else, I have striven to be true Truth was the one virtue which I powerfulness have held fast, and did hold fast, through all extremity save when thy good--the life--they fame--were put in question But a lie is never good, even though death threaten the other side Even though Hesters sin is the one the book is titled after and centered around, it is not almost the worst sin committed.

Malaria and DDT Essay -- Health Biology Essays
Malaria and DDT Malaria has been a huge problem among more developing nations over the past century. The amount of people in the inviolate world that die from malaria each year is between 700,000 and 2.7 million. 75% of these deaths are African children (Med. Letter on CDC & FDA, 2001). 90% of the malaria cases in the world are primed(p) in Sub-Saharan Africa. Once again, the majority of these deaths are of children (Randerson, 2002). The numbers speak for themselves. Malaria is a huge problem and needs to be dealt with immediately. There kick in been many attempts at preventing malaria, none of which have been very successful. These have usually involved protecting human beings from mosquitoes, the dreaded carriers of the disease, by eliminating their breeding places. Attempts have been made at destroying larvae as they grow in the water, but none have managed to stop the onslaught of malaria. Recently (before 1999), in some locations, certain drug-resistan t strains of malaria such as P. falciparum have arisen. The P. falciparum strain is considered the most lethal form of malaria and can cause neurological damage (Poser, 1999). This presence of strains of malaria that do not respond to conventional drug-treatment poses a unexampled problem for malaria control. The hope is that a malaria vaccine can be developed. However, development of such a vaccine is far off. One possible developer of such a vaccine, Henri Vial of the Montpellier University II in France, has developed a drug that kills the malaria parasite by preventing it from replicating in the red blood cells. However, this drug, called G25, has only been tested on laboratory monkeys and still needs to undergo further testing. It is estimate... ...s way into the water where it is absorbed by fish and marine animals. The substance is stored in the fatty tissues of the animal where it sash until it is needed, like during a sickness or when one is deprived of food . This can cause the immune system of an animal to respond to disease with less efficiency. tilt such as carp have shown significant immune-system suppression and high levels of pesticide-induced toxicity (Repetto, Baliga, 1996). If birds feed upon these aquatic animals, then they too will pick up the chemical. The thinning of egg-shells and thereof a decrease in successful births has been linked with exposure to pesticides such as DDT. However, these studies have been done in the field and therefore the results are uncertain and inaccurate. It is difficult to tell the extent of the chemicals effect on the biological system (Repetto, Baliga, 1996).
